How can an Airplane knock down a big tall building?

I don't really know,,,I do know that in 1946 a B-17 bomber crashed into the Empire State Building,,it didn't fall down, didn't even burn down. You would think the technology and engineering of the Twin Towers would have been greatly improved over the Empire State Building.
